-
Prescription Guidelines: Controlled substances are prescribed only when deemed necessary for the treatment of specific psychiatric conditions and in accordance with established clinical guidelines. Our clinicians adhere to evidence-based practices and consider alternative treatment options before prescribing controlled substances. It's important to note that clients currently on long-term benzodiazepine therapy may require a benzodiazepine taper plan in line with FDA guidance. This guidance emphasizes that benzodiazepines are approved for short-term use only due to the risks associated with long-term therapy. Therefore, our clinic prioritizes the safe and gradual tapering of benzodiazepines for clients who have been using them long-term, in collaboration with the client to minimize potential withdrawal effects and ensure their safety and well-being.
-
Patient Evaluation: Prior to prescribing controlled substances, thorough evaluations are conducted to assess the client's medical history, current symptoms, previous treatment experiences, and potential risk factors for substance misuse or addiction. This evaluation helps ensure that controlled substances are prescribed safely and appropriately.
-
Monitoring and Follow-Up: Clients receiving controlled substances are closely monitored through regular follow-up appointments to evaluate treatment effectiveness, monitor for adverse effects, and assess for signs of misuse or dependence. Treatment plans may be adjusted as needed based on ongoing assessment.
-
Risk Mitigation Strategies: To minimize the risk of misuse, diversion, and overdose, our clinic employs various risk mitigation strategies, including urine drug testing, prescription monitoring program checks, pill counts, and patient education on safe medication storage and disposal.
-
Collaboration and Communication: Our clinicians collaborate closely with clients, as well as other healthcare providers involved in their care, to ensure coordinated and comprehensive treatment. Open communication and transparency are encouraged to promote optimal outcomes and patient safety.
-
Non-Compliance: Clients who fail to comply with the terms of their controlled substance agreement, engage in misuse, or exhibit concerning behavior may be subject to appropriate interventions, including referral to addiction specialists or discontinuation of controlled substance therapy. Any aggressive behavior or harassment towards staff will result in a safe taper of controlled substances and immediate discharge from our clinic. We prioritize the safety and well-being of our staff and maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any form of aggression or harassment.

By adhering to these policies, we aim to promote safe and responsible use of controlled substances while providing effective treatment for our clients' medical needs.
