frequently asked questions
what to expect during your first appointment
What does a psychiatric nurse practitioner do?
Think of a psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) as a mental health provider who can listen to your story, help you understand what’s going on, and, if it makes sense for you, prescribe medication. We’re trained in psychiatry from based on the nursing model, so our focus is on whole-person care; not just symptoms.
Will I get therapy here too?
We don’t provide full weekly therapy sessions, but we do include supportive conversation, coping strategies, and lifestyle guidance as part of your care. We usually recommend that you see a therapist as well for the most comprehensive treatment. Many of our clients see a separate therapist as well, and we’re happy to coordinate with them if you’d like.

Do I have to start medication right away?
Not at all! Your first visit is about you-your story, your concerns, and your goals. Medication might be one option, but it’s never the only one. You’ll always be part of the decision-making process and determine when you're ready to start medication.
What actually happens at the first visit?
It’s a conversation. We’ll talk about your history, what’s been weighing on you, and what you’d like to change. By the end, you’ll leave with a plan that feels clear and doable.
How long is the first appointment?
The first appointment is 90 minutes. It may end up being shorter, but the goal is for you to have plenty of time to talk without feeling rushed. This is the only time we will be able to into this much depth about who you are what your concerns are, so we can develop the most appropriate treatment plan possible.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes! Many people love the flexibility of meeting online. You’ll get a secure video link and can join from home, work, or wherever you feel most comfortable. For those who prefer we also have in person appointments available.

How often will I need to come back?
It depends on your needs. Some people check in biweekly at first, others monthly. Once you are in a good, more stable place with your treatment appointments may be scheduled out further. We’ll work together to find a rhythm that supports your progress.

Will my insurance cover my
appointment?

We are in network with most major insurances including Maryland Medicaid, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Health Care, Cigna, Aetna, Tricare East, and Magellan. Once you provide your insurance information via the inquiry form or booking site we will check to make sure you're eligible for our services. Based on your insurance your visit may have a copay or coinsurance fee. If you have a high deductible you may be responsible for your full appointment cost until your deductible is met.
